Ice Cool
Seeing icebergs floating silently by in the Southern Oceans is a truly inspiring sight. But they remind us that the fresh water they carry is something vital to all life and something we need to use wisely and well.
This section is all about ice and water and its importance in sustaining life in our world.
Lesson 1: Iceberg Alley Literacy & ICT |
| This activity introduces pupils to the awesome beauty of icebergs through literature and ICT. They will create descriptive images of the shapes and colours of icebergs. |
Lesson 2: Mean Temperatures Maths |
| Temperatures in Antarctica are extremely cold, much colder than the UK. At the South Pole, it is always well below freezing and in the winter months from April to September it is close to -60C every day. |
Lesson 3: Iceberg Balloons Science |
| As you travel through the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, you are regularly aware of beautiful, silent shapes in the form of frozen icebergs. 80% or more of an iceberg is hidden below the surface of the water, but how is it that the icebergs float at all, when ice is denser than water. Shouldn’t icebergs sink? |
Lesson 4: Nice n Icy Geography |
| This activity introduces children to the process of ice formation that takes place every year in the seas around Antarctica and leads to the continent doubling in size during the winter months. |
Lesson 5: Responsible Use of Water Inspire to Action |
| In this section we will explore the meaning of the value of Responsibility. Use the questions below to stimulate discussion and reflection on this value. Once the children have understood the value of Responsibility, they should explore the Inspire to Action Challenges on how to use water wisely.
You will almost certainly know of some ways in which to use water wisely, but just how wise could
we be when it comes to water? The ideas below are a starting point. What new ideas can the children come up with? |
